Strangeway and Strangeways Families in the Leeds Area

Having started my research on one specific family line I soon found BMD and census entries that did not fit. It became clear that there were a number of Strangeway(s) family lines that did not seem to have any close links.

The early research suggested that the main family lines found in the Leeds area started from these six ancestors -

A - John Strangeways
Born 16 Sep 1773 at York and married Elizabeth Cartwright on 08 Aug 1797 at York

B - William Strangways
Born about Dec 1778 at York and married Ann Mapham about 1808

C - Robert Strangeway
Born 24 Nov 1784 at York and married Sarah Ryley 21 Dec 1806 at St Saviour in York

D - James Strangeways
Born 4 Oct 1789 at Wiggington - son of Robert and Jane Strangeways (nee Wallas). Married Sarah Lumley in 1820

E - James Strangeways
Born about Oct 1758 at Langton, Malton and married Jane Robinson on 12 Nov 1781 at Langton

F - Thomas Strangeways
Born 6 Apr 1765 at Tweedmouth, Northumberland and married Elizabeth Benny (or Binney) about 1790. And tracing back to George Strangeways born around 1673 more..

Possible Ancestry

However more work and more earlier data means that it is possible to form an idea of how earlier generations may have been linked together.

My current theory is that if we go back far enough then Family Lines A, B, C, D and E all trace back to one common family. And there are enough records available now to support this theory.

Going Back Even Further

The obvious conclusion is that the Berwick on Tweed family line traces back to the medieval family documented in the Strangeways, Donaldson, Selby pedigree and that the York family line connects to pedigree in the Visitation of Yorkshire - but things are rarely that straight-forward in family history research. This story has more chapters as yet unwritten.
