Strangwige Families of Deptford in Kent
Quite how this family may connect with the others here is unknown - and may indeed be totally unrelated. So not much has been discovered and the research fades out in the late 1700’s. However there are some references to the surname as early as 1563. In fact British History Online has an example from 1535 of a document containing - “Strangways (Strangwige), Sir Giles”
Any ideas, theories or clues? Is this surname from the same origins as Strangwick and / or Strangwich? For according to one source - “The surname of STRANGWICK is a variant of the name STRANGWAYS and was of the locational group of surnames meaning one who came from Strangeways, a place in County Lancashire. The name was derived from the Old English word STRANGGEWAEC, literally meaning the dweller by the river with a strong current.”
